Sadly, fiction imitates life!
Posted in Are you serious?, Stuff, Time 2 Piss People Off on March 19th, 2007 by sherlockSo I’m watching the Julia Louise-Drefus(sp) show, it’s the first time I’ve seen it… The adventures of ??? Anyway, the premise of the episode is how she is more interested in voting for the American Idol then an actual election, so much so that she gets to the polling place too late to vote. So then she is upset that she isn’t more involved in the process like she was when she was younger and goes out and joins an activist group that is anti-oil drilling. So in the end, which what I gather was to be the funny, the group she has joined is actually the opposite of what she thought, she hadn’t even read their brochure to find out what they were about.
At the Winter Park Art Festival this weekend, we were approached by a women with some petition for a wetlands initiative of some kind, I saw several people signing it. When I asked what exactly it was for, we were given a very brief explaination, less then a sentence worth. She expected us to sign right there with what I would call no actual information. I asked where I could read more about the petition and the woman seemed to get angry. I told her I don’t sign anything without reading about it. I would have thought that she would hand me a brochure or even a leaflet that explained more than what she had told me. She just seemed to get more aggrivated by my questioning, so I asked if they had a website that I could look it up on, that seemed to be the last straw and she turned away and stalked off yelling out a website as she left. I guess she didn’t really care about the petition, just getting us to sign. If I felt commited to a cause, I would gladly explain what it was and how the petition would help. It’s not that I wouldn’t sign the petition, it may really be something that I believe in, it’s just that I want to know exactly what the hell it does. Sadly, just telling people that it is good for the environment seemed to get a lot of people to sign something even though they don’t even know what it does.
It’s kind of like when on Penn & Teller Bullshit, they had people signing a petition to repeal women’s suffrage, I think only one person realized what that actually meant.
